Revealed – 2011 Yamaha R1 with twin-clutch box

Twin Clutch Transmission R1

Japan based motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha Motorcycle Company also has plans to equip its flagship R1 superbike with an electronically controlled twin-clutch transmission just like on the Honda VFR 1200F sports tourer in the near future.

But, Yamaha plans to use a different approach when compared to what Honda did with the twin-clutch tranny of the VFR 1200F. Unlike Honda’s approach, in which one input shaft passes through the other, Yamaha plans to use two input shafts which are half the length of a normal gearbox’s single shaft. Also, the two clutches in the Yamaha twin-clutch tranny will be positioned at either sides of the transmission, to offer better weight distribution.

Yamaha’s twin-clutch gearbox possesses a much simpler layout and configuration when compared with the Honda unit but increases the size and width of the engine and transmission unit. Yamaha claims that the weight balance offered by its twin-clutch transmission is far greater than what the Honda unit offers as Yamaha’s unit balances the weight equally on both sides of the engine whereas the Honda system loads the engine up on one side.

According to Yamaha, the main advantages of its twin-clutch gearbox are that it is adequately compact and provides smooth gearshifts without affecting the lateral balance of a motorcycle once it is mounted onto it.

Although there are no available images of Yamaha’s twin-clutch transmission layout, detailed patents prove that Yamaha is feverishly working on this concept. There are reports which suggest that Yamaha has been working on this idea for the past three years.

When will Yamaha reveal its version of a motorcycle twin-clutch transmission is anybody’s guess but we speculate it could be as soon as the end of 2010.

Yamaha could also launch the twin-clutch transmission equipped R1 in India, once it has been launched internationally, since Yamaha has become quite popular in India with its recent spate of launches and this would be a worthy option for those looking for a fast, technologically advanced litre class motorcycle.
