Official – Bajaj to launch all-new Pulsar next year

Bajaj Pulsar 220

According to Business Standard, Rajiv Bajaj, managing director of Bajaj Auto limited, said in a recent interaction with the media that the company will launch an all-new Pulsar next year in India.

The new Pulsar will have “a completely new look, advanced engine and advanced technology.”

Bajaj has shown a couple of modified Pulsars, created by modification house Phoenix at the Jakarta Auto fair last month (click here for full details). The company could revive the 150 and 180cc Pulsars or could put a completely new Pulsar with higher displacement on the market.

Bajaj, during the launch of the Pulsar 135LS late last year, said it was working on higher displacement Pulsars displacing up to 400cc. We’re expecting to see a 350cc Pulsar with liquid cooling, mono-shocks, futuristic styling, dual discs, and four-valve engine.

Bajaj Avenger 220 launched

Bajaj Avenger 220

Bajaj Auto has upped the ante of its lone cruiser offering in the Indian two-wheeler market, the Avenger, by bolting on a de-tuned version of the Pulsar 220’s DTS-i engine. The 220 cc Avenger produces 2.01 PS of power and 1.62 Nm of torque less than its similar engined sporty sibling.

The Avenger 220 succeeds the Avenger 200 and offers extras such as more power, torque and features. The new engine enables the bike to pump out 19.03 PS of max power and 17.5 Nm of max torque. Bajaj has priced the Avenger 220 competitively at Rs. 69,930 (Ex-Showroom Delhi) and the bike is available in a choice of four colour options.

The launch of the Avenger 220 now means that Bajaj has completely done away with its 200 cc oil-cooled DTS-i engine for its Indian range of bikes, while also endowing the Avenger with more oomph for eating up the kilometres on long open roads.

Next in Line – Bajaj Avenger 220

Bajaj Avenger

Bajaj Auto gave India its first cruiser – the Kawasaki-Bajaj Eliminator. After the agreement between Kawasaki and Bajaj in India ended, Bajaj bought in the Avenger, which essentially was a modified Eliminator.

Bajaj increased the Avenger’s displacement from 175cc to 180cc, which then became a 200. With new information from our friends at Indian Cars Bikes, that trend will continue with the emergence of the 220cc Avenger.

Bajaj Auto’s spokeswoman Tejaswini -

The Avenger 220 is indeed coming shortly. The Avenger production has not been stopped per se but the Avenger’s 200cc engine has been upgraded to 220cc. This engine is similar to the one on Bajaj Pulsar 220.

The Bajaj Avenger 220 will use a carburetor. It will also be more expensive than the 200cc Avenger. Bajaj is also said to begin bookings for this high displacement cruiser shortly.

Could the 220cc Avenger be a result of the reverberations created with Harley’s entry into India? Could the Avenger 220 play the role of a poor man’s Harley?

Bajaj Pulsar 220 gets shipped to Sri Lanka

Bajaj Pulsar 220

David Pieris Motor Company, Bajaj Auto’s distributor in Sri Lanka has launched the new Pulsar 220cc motorcycle in the country. The Lankan Pulsar 220 is the carbureted version which was launched in India last year.

Since the Lankan Pulsar comes with a DTS-i, 4-stroke, 220cc air and oil-cooled engine, there isn’t any change to the technical specifications of the motorcycle. The rest of the bike remains very much the same since it is a direct import.

Spokeswoman of David Pieris Motor Company Ltd -

Pulsar Power is renowned in Sri Lanka and with the Pulsar 220cc, the Pulsar brand simply extends its lead in power-riding

The Pulsar brand has placed Bajaj in the global map. The bike has helped Bajaj penetrate a hundred international markets. As long as Bajaj continues to churn out new bikes that are true to the Pulsar DNA, the engine displacement will not matter. They have proved that with the Pulsar 135LS, which is a runaway hit.

Bajaj launches revised Pulsar 135LS

new revised Bajaj Pulsar 135LS

The Bajaj Pulsar 135LS is a huge success and has sold more than one lakh units within a month of its launch. Now Bajaj has launched a revised version of the Pulsar 135LS with a few changes.

The new Bajaj Pulsar 135LS gets a new O-ring chain which has rubber O-rings lining the rollers which prevent dust and dirt particles from entering the chain rollers and also maintain lubrication for longer periods. This facilitates for the full chain cover being replaced by a half chain cover.

The main visual change is that the new Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS gets a fully matt-black finished engine. The tyre hugging mud guard on the rear wheel is replaced by a new split mud guard which is smaller and looks sporty. All these additions add to the already mean looking Pulsar 135LS’s raw appeal.

Superbike sales in the mountains beat expectations

Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R

Superbike manufacturers such as Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha have been taken aback by the response their high-end machines have received way up in the mountains. The manufacturers are reporting decent sales figures of their high-end bikes from Northern and North-Eastern parts of the country.

Atul Gupta, Vice-President, Marketing and Sales, Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited -

Much to our astonishment, 10% of superbikes have been bought by highlanders in Dehradun and Guwahati

The general trend among big bike manufacturers is to focus mainly on customers from metro cities, since these customers are the ones who are most likely to have the moolah to splurge on these exquisite machines. Manufacturers see Mumbai, Pune, Delhi and Bangalore as the regions with the highest demand for their high-end bikes, but this recent statistic of good contributions from the mountainous regions has taken them by surprise.

Manufacturers attribute the good sales of their high end machines to the steadily rising disposable income and the availability of easy financing services. The presence of a well-trained service network and hassle free support for the bikes is also one of the factors pushing up sales of these bikes.

N.K Rattan, Head, Marketing and Sales, Honda Motorcycle and Scooters India -

We have special teams to service these bikes across the country. This has boosted the confidence of the consumer, and has translated into better sales

Pankaj Dubey, Head, Marketing and Sales, India Yamaha Motor -

The actual numbers coming from the north-east mountain region are not as significant as the metros, but they are crucial. For this super-niche segment every unit sold makes a lot of difference to our sales strategy.

Though manufacturers have been surprised by the numbers reported from the mountains, the metros still lead the sales charts. Mumbai accounts for every 1 out three superbikes sold in the country, followed by Delhi and Bangalore, which account for around 20 % of the total sales of these bikes in the country.

The superbike market in India began to boom only when Yamaha brought in its YZF-R1 and MT-01 into the country during the year 2008. This was followed by launches from rival manufacturers such as Suzuki and Honda who brought in products such as the CBR 1000RR Fireblade, CB 1000R, Suzuki GSX-1300R Hayabusa and the Suzuki Intruder.

The Hayabusa has gone onto take the lead in the superbike sales charts with a sales figure of 108 units till date. It has also enabled Suzuki to go atop the manufacturers sales chart ranking, leaving Yamaha and Honda to bring up the rear of the pack.

The superbike space in India has all the global majors presently in it except Kawasaki, who only have the Ninja 250R as their sole offering to Indian customers. But, this could change in the very near future, with Kawasaki setting up its Indian subsidiary and having said that customers in India can expect bigger and more powerful bikes from their international range very soon.

Report – Bajaj’s targets for overseas markets

Bajaj Discover 100

Bajaj Auto Limited (BAL), the country’s second largest two-wheeler manufacturer is targeting sales volumes of 70 % from its overseas operations in the years ahead. The company plans to take the fight to Honda Motor Company in the markets of Asia, Africa and Latin America.

The company which had only a 30 % contribution from sales in overseas markets last year, aims to reach the set target of 70 % over the coming years. The company will be focusing mainly on its motorcycles in order to achieve its target.

Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director, Bajaj Auto -

It will take us several years, but it only shows how much headroom there is for Bajaj even if we only focus on motorcycles

Bajaj also plans on tripling its current global market share of 10 % to 30 % in the coming years by leveraging its current partnerships with KTM and Kawasaki. The company is also looking to venture into new partnerships and Joint Venture (JV) agreements, in order to gain a leg up on market share currently held by rivals such as Honda Motor Company and Chinese two-wheeler manufacturers.

Bajaj has also set its eyes on achieving an annual sales figure of 5 million units by the year 2012. The company had sold 2.8 million vehicles during the financial year 2009-2010. Bajaj’s rival Honda had an annual sales figure of 9.63 million units, which also includes the sales figures of Hero Honda Motors Limited, the country’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer and Honda’s sister concern in which Honda owns a 26 % stake.

Bajaj can definitely achieve the targets which it has set, considering that it has already started snapping at market leader Hero Honda’s heels with its 100 cc Discover now having become the second largest selling bike in India in a span of just 11-months since its launch. The Discover has also enabled the company to eat into some of Hero Honda’s market share and re-affirm its position as a strong contender for Hero Honda’s position as the country’s and world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer.
