TVS records consistent demand across segments

A strong and a consistent demand across all the segments have resulted in the cumulative growth of 15% for TVS. The overall sales in July 2010 was 1, 66, 214 and the company bettered it by posting a figure of 1,89, 962 units this month. While the company’s major production is for domestic market, the exports too seem to be rising exponentially. This year the company has posted growth of 34%. Being the two wheeler company as we know it, TVS has excelled in scooter and bike market by 22 and 14% respectively and the three wheeler production has seen a boost of 6% over the corresponding month last year. Even though the company has not launched a completely new product recently, TVS has consistently been chipping away at the sales chart. TVS sells brands like Scooty, MaxR, Jive, Wego and Apache in India.

Spied – TVS Tormax spotted in Chennai

TVS Indonesia released the Tormax step-through in May this year which has a new 3-valve 150cc engine. The Tormax features a one of a kind switch which enables the rider to choose between two different exhaust notes, basically enabling the rider to either connect or release the muffler from the end can. The reason behind reminding you about these features is that the Tormax step-through has now been spotted by an IndianMotosBlog.com reader in Chennai. The picture here shows two Tormax mules being tested which could mean that a local launch is highly likely. If you look at the pictures, nothing similar exists in the Indian market for now as the Tormax comes with a scooter's frame with bigger wheels giving it the comfort and practicality of a scooter, but the ride and handling of a motorcycle. We assume such a product fills the gaps between a scooter and motorcycles perfectly. Could TVS position this two-wheeler between the Jive and the Wego? Creating an impact with a product that has the playing field to its own sounds like a good idea.

What is the TVS Max4R LX version all about?

TVS has launched the MAX4R LX on the 30th of May. On the lines of the Max4R launched last year, the Max4R LX is an enhanced, rugged version. The LX variant has been made stronger and tougher to carry heavy loads (for people who use their motorcycle for carrying baskets, sacks, logs, cans and vessels).

What are the features on the TVS Max4R LX?

Few points to talk about on this motorcycle are the mobile charger point, tougher body and well cushioned seat. The mobile charger facility is a very handy feature of this bike as we all know how important mobile phones have become in our life. For a vendor who is always on the move, this is very useful.

What are the interesting bits on the Max4R LX' construction?

Apart from this TVS has ensured that most body parts are made of steel instead of fiber or soft plastics. Rear indicators and stop lamp have been protected to prevent breakage. To make the riding experience more comfortable, seats come with extra padding. Another interesting feature of the bike is its rear shock absorbers. The motorcycle has two pairs of shock absorbers, almost like a truck fitted with helper springs to share the load with the primary suspension when its past the permissible levels. The padded seat, two pair of shock absorbers and rigid body makes this bike perfect for rural areas where the road quality, if there is any, is usually bad.

What about the Max4R LX' engine and gearbox?

The Max4R LX comes with an air-cooled, four-stroke, single cylinder, 109.7cc engine producing 8.4bhp at 7,500rpm and a maximum torque of 8.3 Nm at 5500rpm.

And the Max4R LX price?

The TVS Max4R LX is priced at Rs. 39,090 (ex-showroom, Delhi) and has been targeted at rural areas of the country. The bike will be available in shades of red and black and will be sold through the TVS dealerships across the country. It is quite startling to see that TVS has not listed the MaxR4 or the LX variant on its official website.

TVS Indonesia released the TurboMax step-through last month with a new 3-valve 150cc engine. We presented the list of new technologies on the TurboMax in a stand-alone blog post. One of the interesting and unique features was Dual Tune Exhaust. A switch on the handlebar allows the TurboMax rider to toggle between two exhaust notes. In India it is a common sight to see Pulsar riders fit cans to exhaust to boost the amplitude of the exhaust note.

The video shows how much difference there is between the two exhaust notes. The exhaust sounds like a moped on the normal mode and ..well..less like a moped in the second mode. For motorcycles like Apache, TVS has to make the two notes contrasting or else riders will not see a point in it and opt for a custom exhaust instead. Video Credit - TMCBlog.com

Report – Technology expected on future TVS bikes

TVS Indonesia recently introduced the Tormax step-through with a handful of new technology. The development of these technologies would be with a broader scope - to feature them across the entire range of bikes.

Turbotune Technology

Turbotune Technology is a patent owned by TVS. The liquid-cooled 150cc engine uses three valves - two intake and one exhaust. The power output as a result is 13.2 PS @ 8000 rpm and torque output stands at 12.5 Nm @ 5500 rpm. The engine is married to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Dual Tone Muffler

Dual Tone Muffler function helps the rider to feel different at times. He can change the exhaust note by operating a switch on the handle bar. The "Turbo" sound makes him feel faster and more attacking in the corners while the "Normal" sound is for busy streets and commutes to work.

Horizontal gas-filled canister monoshock

Horizontal gas-filled canister monoshock and double disc brakes help enahnce rider comfort and safety. Monoshock technology will be yet another new feature for TVS in India. The front disc size dia is 290 mm at the front and 185 mm at rear.

Highly functional instrument cluster

High-tech instrument cluster includes a digital speedometer, tachometer, odometer (with dual trip meters), gear indicator, stop watches for recording best 0-60kmph time and top speed, helmet reminder, service reminder, battery charge indicator, fuel level indicator and engine temperature indicator. It's a very rich instrument cluster which, in the untouched state, can suit the Apache.

TVS introduces Tormax this month in Indonesia

Hosur-based Two- and Three-wheeler manufacturer TVS Motors will introduce "Tormax" in Indonesia during mid-May, Indonesian auto blogs are reporting. Tormax technology stands for Maximum Torque and will be seen first on a 150cc single cylinder, air-cooled engine. Our Indonesian language skills aren't at their best, but what we understand is this technology is similar to the three-valve, twin-spark technology (CCVTI) introduced on the 125cc Flame motorcycle.

TVS plans India’s cheapest motorcycle

Inspired by the Tata Nano mania, TVS Motors has started work on India’s cheapest bike which will only set you back by only Rs 30,000. The key aspects of development that are under consideration are good technology, fuel efficiency and low cost. The company wants to target a space between the moped segment and bike segment. The cheapest moped that TVS sells is for Rs 25,000 and the cheapest bike that the company sells is for Rs 35,000. The new bike will sit in-between these products. There is room for introducing one more product at the lower end of the motorcycle segment. Our cheapest motorcycle comes for Rs 36,000 while the most expensive moped is tagged Rs 25,000. There might be a new product positioned in this range. The Indian market is demanding, the quality of motorcycles on offer here is very high in terms of finish, engine performance, styling and fuel efficiency. The challenge would be to offer good features at competitive price points

TVS working on Apache, Scooty Pep upgrade

TVS is planning to upgrade their two best selling models - the Apache and the Scooty Pep. Both products have contributed heavily to the company's sales figures over the last few years. In order to further benefit on the popularity, the company has decided to give customers upgraded models. However the picture is not clear at the moment as to what these upgrades are as the talks are still in discussion phase. The Apache is expected to have the same name and body structure. Technology might be bettered and certain plastic body work might be reworked.

We recently reported on the Apache ABS which was displayed at the Auto Expo last year. The upgraded products will see a slight increase in the cost as well. The company says it is trying its best to keep the price as low as possible.

Lets hope that TVS brings in a high capacity Apache through these upgrades and not something like the Apache HyperEdge which was nothing but a cosmetic job, or sticker job to be precise. We all have been waiting eagerly for a 200cc+ Apache. Will it come this year given Honda, Yamaha and Mahindra are looking to penetrate the quarter liter space with attractive bikes?

Apache goes gym-ming and builds ABS

We posted about the launch of Apache ABS yesterday. We thought that the ABS of the Apache won't be a high-spec version thanks to the price constraints. But looking at the specifications of the ABS reported in Burnyourfuel.com, we are completely awe-struck. TVS seem to have developed a gem of a technological marvel in the form of the ABS. A whole lot of crucial safety functions are incorporated in this compact system: -> Wheel lock is completely absent -> Safe and clean braking in wet surfaces -> Easy drive-ability -> Protection from Rear lift-off (RLP) -> Brake control of either wheel is independent of each other

TVS to launch Apache RTR ABS this month?

TVS has always been a fore-runner when it comes to bringing to India the latest technology available elsewhere in the world. India's first bike with a catalytic converter (the Shogun), India's first bike with rear and petal disks (the Apache) are some of the glorious examples of their technical expertise. At the Auto Expo last year, TVS showcased hybrid three and two-wheeler and prior to this, they introduced electric variants of the Scooty. We saw the India's third largest manufacturer equip its flagship model, the Apache, with a state-of-the-art ABS system at the Auto Expo 2010. Finally, the ABS variant of the Apache will be launched this month according to Vicky.in.

Though the 150cc variant was not very impressive in terms of performance, the RTRs proved to be maniacal performers with several racing traits derived from the TVS Racing team's experience. What is ABS?

ABS stands for "Antilock Braking System". You would have experienced slipping and skidding of the tyres when you brake hard from high speeds or in slippery surfaces. This leads to loss of control for a fraction of time which could be disastrous at times. ABS prevents the skidding of the tyres by releasing the brake for a very small amount of time. A complicated sensor system takes care of the above operation. Though we might assume that the result will be a considerably longer braking distance, in reality the braking distance hardly varies. A clean, safe and effective braking is attained with almost zero burn-out of the tyre as a result of the ABS. So the next time you see a slippery road or a wet tarmac, you don't have to worry about skidding, provided you shell out an extra 3K for the ABS variant of the Apache.
