Honda plans motorcycle for 27,000 rupees; Possible India foray

The world’s largest manufacturer of Motorcycles, Honda Motor Co plans to launch a low cost bike at a price point of Rs 27,000. This new development is because of its renewed focus on emerging nations and because the Indian and Chinese competitors eating into its market share.

The interesting thing about this new development is that the new bike will be cheaper than its current offering CD Dawn (which is in tie up with Hero Motors) by a whopping Rs 6000.

Tasuhiro Oyama, senior managing director, Honda’s motorcycle operation -

Honda will build and sell the two-wheeler for as little as 4,000 yuan, (Rs. 27,000 & $600) in China starting next year and also introduce it in Nigeria and Latin America.

And with rumors circulating that Honda plans to play the game solo, this new bike will compete with its old JV’s offering. Hero Honda was present in segments which Honda didn’t bother tapping all this while, but that’s about to change, and change very quickly if products like this low cost bike come out in the next couple of years once the partnership is done with.

As regards the reported October 21, 2010 comment by Tatsuhiro OYAMA of Honda to the effect that “Honda will build and sell the two-wheeler for as littlle as 4,000 yuan ($600) in China starting next year, and also introduce it in Nigeria and Latin America”. Up here in Tokyo, Honda spokesman deny this report, and my comment would be that they should know. In other words Mr. Oyama spoke a little early.
My further comment is that it would be interesting to have comparable figures for relative cost of production of a bike like this in India, China and Indonesia. Are such numbers available?

appreciate your own timely comment, Henry STOKES.
