A duo of Indian scientists have brought out a preliminary virtual design of a new motorcycle engine, which runs purely on compressed air. The duo’s design has already been elaborately described in a paper in the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
Their engine design consists of a small air turbine, powered by compressed air, which is capable of generating enough power to propel a motorcycle for a duration of 40 mins.
Bharat Raj Singh, One of the Authors of the Paper and a Researcher at the SMS Institute of technology Lucknow -
Some 50 to 60% of the present emission levels in some areas could be reduced with the new technology, though a number of technical challenges remain
The duo now faces the tough challenge of designing a compressed air storage tank, which is capable of storing enough air in it for long distance rides and commutes, since the existing air storage tank has a range of only 30 kms.
