Yamaha Motors India Ltd. Is looking at the bringing gearless scooters to India. Global sales of Yamaha depict that it sells more scooters than motorcycles.”The sales figures across the globe for two wheelers show greater sales of scooters and motoscooters, but India is an exception” quoted Mr. Pankaj Dubey, the company’s National Business head.
Yamaha is conducting a feasibility study and the results are expected soon. Yamaha say that scooters are a total 20% of the global two wheeler sales and are still a strong category to let go. Further he adds that the company’s past failure in the commuter 100-125cc segment also is a cause for looking into scooters. Apart from this Yamaha currently is concentrating on its 150+cc bikes.
“We will bring scooters tailor made for the indian driving conditions rather than just duplicating what we sell globally.” says Mr Dubey.
All this definitely builds a lot hope that Yamaha might save the otherwise diminishing scooter segment in India.
