Here’s an official video from the archive of Bajaj explaining the reasons behind the company’s move to bring in a smaller displacement Pulsar 135 LS (recently launched in Indonesia also). The CEO of the company and the head of R&D division speak along with existing Pulsar owners. A good video.

What does the Pulsar 135 stand for?

The Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS (LS stands for Light Sports) has sold in thousands, 50,000 to be exact, were sold in its first 75 days, which is a new benchmark for any bike from its category till date in our country!

The Pulsar 135 LS comes with a 4 valve DTS-i engine capable of delivering 13.5ps of power. With sporty looks and features like aluminium clip-on handle bars, split seat and a light kerb weight of only 122 kg an awesome Power-to-Weight ratio of 110.6 Ps/tonne is achieved

The Pulsar 135 LS comes with a price tag of Rs. 51,000 ex-showroom Delhi and is available in two colors of Passion Red and Midnight Black.

Is the 135cc bike a Pulsar?

Does displacement really matter? Why should the term ‘sport’ be used only on a larger displacement bike? If the Pulsar 135 is nimble and packs a punch, then it too can be termed ‘sport.’

What we don’t want to see Bajaj doing is lowering the displacement below 135 for a Pulsar motorcycle. Perhaps I might be wrong, but can a 125cc motorcycle be true to the Pulsar’s spirit? I always believed the 125cc class of motorcycles in India was for the commuter’s category or other styles of bikes like the dirt bikes, which don’t have the market in India.

A 125cc engine sounds small, it could be light and prove effective, but we’ve seen the 125cc Bajaj bikes like the Discover and Platina which was no where near ‘sport.’ Let’s reserve the 125cc motor for the mileage seeking commuter.

Bajaj’s next task should be getting out some of the bigger Pulsars which they spoke about during the launch of this bike last year. The Bajaj Pulsar 250 could be the company’s next big Pulsar bike.

What’s the 400cc Pulsar all about?

Rajiv Bajaj told me that his company is working on bigger Pulsars which will displace up to 400cc during the P135′s launch last year. The high powered bikes are expected to roll out by 2011. We can expect the first high displacement Pulsar to come out in 12 months time. These performance bikes are also expected to come with multi-valve DTS-i engines which debuts on the 135LS.

Bajaj will also bring a cruiser under the Pulsar brand in the near future. No we’re not speculating here. According to Mr.Bajaj, even cruiser bikes come under the performance category, which is why the Pulsar brand will be used on such type of models. Bajaj is trying to bring out as many styles of motorcycles as possible. He wants to take the company into a new direction with the introduction of such models.

Bajaj has some R&D projects on hybrid or electric vehicles. We’re told that Bajaj can launch a hybrid two-wheeler in the years to come. This could be a scooter.

Bajaj has launched the Pulsar 135 in Indonesia recently. The motorcycle sports a slightly modified rear fender.

The specifications remain absolutely same and Bajaj is counting on the bike's spirited performance and affordable price tag for its success.

The Pulsar 135cc Pulsar LS (light sport) produces 13.5hp that propels it to a top speed of 115kph. Expected to return a fuel economy figure of 65kmpl in city conditions, the P135 is targeted at customers in the age group of 18 to 30 years.

Priced at 51,000 rupees ex-showroom Delhi, the 135cc Pulsar LS holds the title of using the world’s first 4-valve twin-spark petrol engine and the highest top speed and best acceleration in its segment thus far in India.
