Be it an arcade game or a street race, “boost” and “turbo” are the two most important power options everyone looks for. Irrespective of whether we drive a Hero Honda Splendor or a Suzuki Hayabusa, we want more power from our bike. The enormous increase in the sales of performance add-ons over the past five years complements the previous statement.

In this article, we present to you, the case of a Kawasaki Ninja 250R with a Turbocharger and a perfomance ECU. Due to these performance add-ons, the 33 Bhp of the stock Ninja has been upped to 58.2 Bhp.

Usually when a turbo is added, the compression ratio sees a substantial increase and therefore, the compression ratio of the 250cc twin-cylinder mill was lowered initially from 11.6:1 to 8.2:1 for a safe operating condition.

After the installation of the turbo, the compression ratio has gone up from 8.2:1 to 12:1. Coming to the EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection), this system injects an appropriate amount of fuel based on an engine map (a compilation of data) for different operating conditions. Normally, the manufacturers tune their engines to return a decent fuel economy and hence, performance is always compromised.

In this case, a modified engine map has been used with its sole consideration on improving the performance. As a result, the fuel economy has been severely hit but the performance has been tremendously improved.

When the modified Ninja was tested on the dyno, a maximum power of 58.2Bhp at 13,840rpm and a max torque of 30Nm at 9600rpm was measured. Though the performance has been improved drastically, the chassis, braking and other related parts of the Ninja have to be consolidated to take advantage of this bestial power.

Kawasaki Ninja Turbo on dynamometer

What does a Turbocharger do?

A Turbocharger, in simple terms, is a device which uses the unutilized energy of the exhaust gases to feed the engine with more charge. Looking at the construction of the Turbocharger, it has two turbines which are connected to each other. One of the turbines is run by the energy-rich exhaust gases and as a result, the other turbine is operated.

The second turbine is located in the intake manifold and therefore, feeds more air into the intake. The ECU maintains a constant air-fuel ratio and hence with more air being fed in, more petrol is injected which means more power. Thus the energy of the hot exhaust gases is used to increase the power of the vehicle using a turbocharger.

The authorized distributor of Bajaj and Kawasaki motorcycles in Nepal, Hansraj Hulaschand Company, has launched the Kawasaki Ninja 250R in the Nepalese market. Hansraj Hulaschand Company commenced bookings for Ninja in the first week of April, when the bike was officially revealed to the public.

Amit Nandi, Vice-President, Bajaj Auto Limited, India -

The Kawasaki Ninja 250R is a popular machine for novices and experienced riders alike. It is known for its light handling, good fuel economy and comfortable riding posture

Shekhar Golchha, Executive Director, Hansraj Hulaschand & Company -

Bajaj has already created a mark amongst all segments of motorcycles in Nepal. With the Kawasaki Ninja, we attempt to bring in a whole new segment of customers who take pro-biking seriously and enjoy it through-and-through

The bikes sold in Nepal, are shipped from Pune, and then minor assembly of the bikes is carried out by the dealers in Nepal before handing over the bikes to customers.

The Ninja 250R in Nepal is available in two paint shades namely Lime Green and Ebony Black. The bike has been priced at 7,49,000 Nepali Rupees, which translates to 4,68,125 Indian Rupees.

The Ninja 250R in India has not met the expected sales targets set by Bajaj Auto Limited (BAL) in India, mainly due to its 3-lakh INR price tag. With the bike being priced even higher in the Nepalese market, I have no clue as to how many takers the bike will find there.

With the sales growing for the Ninja 250R over the period of time, Bajaj in collaboration with Kawasaki is planning to bring up high end bikes from the Japanese bike maker.

So far Bajaj has sold around 500 units of the Ninja 250R through its probiking showrooms across the country and the response is getting better n better day by day.

Bajaj in agreement with Kawasaki will bring in more Kawasaki bikes some of them will be assembled locally whereas some of them will be brought in as CBU down the year.

As per sources we expect the 600cc Ninja to be the next to be brought into India by Bajaj. The Ninja 250R has a waiting period of about 3 months as of now and the company is planning to reduce it to half in a few months time.

The Ninja 250R is no doubt one of the best 250cc bikes in the world and its a great thing that we have this bike being sold in our country. But the bike is still out of reach of many of the bike enthusiasts in India like myself.

One of the best selling bikes in the world in the 250cc range, this bike has been in talks since the time it was displayed at the 2008 Auto Expo. The most awaited bike of the year 2009 finally got launched in the month of October.

Although 200 Ninjas have come out of the Bajaj Pro-biking showrooms from across the country I my self have'nt seen a single one on the road yet!

The dreams of many bike enthusiasts were shattered when the bike was launched at a heavy price of Rs. 2,69,970(Ex-showroom Delhi). Another disappointment was the all analog meter console of the bike.

It would be a great site to see these machines on roads more in number and im sure if the other manufacturers like Yamaha, Honda or TVS bring in their 250cc bikes the competition will improve which might result in a slash of the price of such bikes.

As per the official Bajaj Auto's press release:

What makes this motorcycle unique is its near-perfect combination of performance, riding comfort and ease of handling. As a result it is as popular among casual riders as it among serious enthusiasts. In India, in a market cluttered with overpowered litre class motorcycles, the Kawasaki Ninja 250R will be the only supersportmotorcycle whose performance is practical for Indian conditions. And with a price tag of less than Rs.3 lacs, it is well within reach of those seeking a super sport motorcycle

Bajaj showcased the Ninja 250R in 2008 Auto Expo and they launched it a year later. Lets wait and watch if they launchKTM's Super Duke or Duke 690mm which they displayed at the 2010 Auto Expo.

One of the best selling bikes in the world in the 250cc range, this bike has been in talks since the time it was displayed at the 2008 Auto Expo. The most awaited bike of the year 2009 finally got launched in the month of October.

Although 200 Ninjas have come out of the Bajaj Pro-biking showrooms from across the country I my self have’nt seen a single one on the road yet!

As per the official Bajaj Auto’s press release:

Lets wait and watch if they launchKTM’s Super Duke or Duke 690mm which they displayed at the 2010 Auto Expo.
